Why doesn't Bontrager make brakes? I received this question on December 24th 1999 via e-mail. Question: You make lots of different components, but not brakes. So what brakes out there are so good that Bontrager doesn't need to make them? Joel
Answer: This is a simple one. Avid makes very good brakes. So does Shimano. We can't make better brakes, so we don't try. I ride with the Avid brakes, the 2.0 model, a very simple design. I think they are great. I also like the way the Shimano brakes work, but I don't like the rattling noises and having to maintain the pivots. I haven't tried the latest models, and they could be better. The difference between the Avids and Shimano brakes is not a life or death issue, it just works out that the Avid's are my preference. I use the XT V-brakes on my single speed. They work well. I did try to develop brakes once, a long time ago. I was working on the Kestrel Nitro, an early full suspension bike, and we needed a brake design that worked well with the suspension system. This was what I came up with. Check them out here: http://www.bontrager.com/rants/rant_0008_08_01_1998.html I think you'll get the idea. There were a lot of photos taken of them at the Long Beach Interbike Trade Show that year. Thanks for the question, KB
